We’re buzzing to welcome Pentire back to our stage on the 20th February, so we spoke with them about all things new tunes, songwriting and hungover festivals.
Hey Pentire! Really excited to have you guys back in Nottingham, what can you tell us about the last time you were here?
We were last here for Dot2Dot last year, we actually played the rescue rooms, we rocked up after playing a festival in Newcastle the night before, so had a heavy weekend… but we had an amazing show, and then to top it off saw Wunderhorse the best we’ve probably ever seen them…
You’re about to embark on your biggest tour yet – congrats! We’re hyped to see you live, what are YOU most excited for about touring?
Personally, I’m most excited about turning off from normal life for a few weeks, touring with your best mates is honestly one of the best feeling you just can’t describe, even with the dodgy hotels and services food, it’s really my favourite time of the year, I can’t wait to do it again, and more often.
The crowd makes a show, and this is our biggest tour yet, it’s going to be FUN!
You’ve recently announced you’ll be playing splendour festival this July. What’s one festival tip you think everyone should know?
Baby wipes, Canned Iced Coffee and lots of orange juice for the Hangovers. The baby wipes aren’t necessary, just useful if no showers…
Oh and always go watch a band a day you don’t know, they might be your new faves…
The new EP is fab. Is there a particular song that felt the most cathartic to record and get out into the world?
Honestly, I think I speak for myself and the rest of the band, ‘Burn’, it’s the song we’re most proud of lyrically, as well as just how good it sounds live! I’m so glad it’s out in the world, as a personal choice, Have You Had Enough has been my fave to listen to during the recording process.
There’s a real coming of age feel to the new tracks and you spoke candidly about that feeling in songs like ‘Underwater’. Music’s taken you out of your hometown now, how do you think that exciting/daunting feeling has translated into some of the newer cuts?
I mean, it’s weird to think Jack and I met 7 years ago and have been on this journey since, growing up in the same area, and now both living in the same area, it’s definitely had a huge impact on the music for sure, and especially this EP, it’s sparked lots of conversations about all things growing up, moving away and it is daunting, yet so exciting, and has definitely grown us as people. I think this is our most mature work yet, although it feels like yesterday me and him started writing songs.
Was there anything else in particular you drew inspiration from during the songwriting process?
I mean most notably, Love On TV was created as an idea from the TV we painted for the ‘Don’t let your love (let you down)’ video we released last year, we painted a red heart, on an Old TV, and so became ‘Love on TV’. The song itself is about striving for love you see in the movies I suppose, not only in romantic relationships but with everybody you know, we’re probably closest as a band right now more than we’ve ever been.
Do you have any pre show rituals?
Some good food somewhere, have a walk around the city, stroll back to the venue around doors, and have a few beers together in the dressing room with some good music on, and always if we can catch some of the openers set. Nothing to out of the ordinary, we don’t have a secret handshake we all do for example, although saying that, maybe we should…
Finally, what’s something you guys have been loving recently (film/book/music/food/something obscure)?
Oooo, good question, collectively we’ve all always been obsessed with Top Gear and can quote it nearly word for word, whether or not that’s something to be proud of, but more recently I’ve managed to get Jake into Gavin and Stacey, which has become the new go to for quoting, not very exciting I know, but there’s an in for you. This tour we want to do better at trying local things too, food, shops, anything. So any tips for Nottingham would be hugely grateful!
